FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission held a public hearing in Anchorage on Thursday, drawing complaints of racism from Alaska Natives.

The hearing was scheduled to allow more rural Alaska Natives to participate. The Alaska Federation of Natives Convention began yesterday, drawing thousands from all over the state.

Among the problems cited were lack of police protection, low employment and poorly funded schools.

The commission might hold additional hearings.
