Zuni artist finishes chalice under the gun

OCTOBER 2, 2000 Zuni Pueblo artist Carlton Jamon finished a special silver chalice used by Pope John Paul II on Sunday just a half hour before Sister Beecher of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament came to collect it at his home in New Mexico. The order asked Jamon to create the chalice in August. But August is a busy month for artists, including Jamon, in part due to the annual Santa Fe Indian Market. So he started the project the last Monday of August, as it was due September 1. Upon finishing it, Jamon said he realized the importance of the work, even though he did it so quickly. Get the Story:
