Buchanan: Columbus a hero

OCTOBER 10, 2000 Presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan considers Christopher Columbus a a hero to Italian-Americans and western civilization. While in Denver, Colorado, Buchanan took time to criticize American Indians who protested the first Columbus Day parade held in the city in almost a decade. He said the protesters threatened violence and used "neo-fascist" tactics to get their message across. He said every civilization makes "mistakes" and that would include Native Americans. He said Plains and Aztec peoples are guilty of atrocities, just like any one else. In an editorial today, The Denver Rocky Mountain News says Buchanan's comments and "usual crude belligerence" demonstrate why he is so low in national polls. The paper says that Buchanan's comparison of Columbus to George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Lt. Col. George Custer is "inflammatory and nonsensical." Get the Story:
