The number of American Indian and minority journalists working at daily newspapers has fallen for the first time in 22 years, according to a study rleeased by the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Of the 56,393 jobs at 950 dailies, minorities hold 6,563 of them. This is down from 6,665, a decline ASNE President Richard A. Oppel called "unaceptable."

There are 249 American Indian journalists at daily newspapers, says ASNE.

The 2001 ASNE conference has two Indian student interns: Jason Begay, a senior at the University of Montana, and Shannon Comes at Night, a junior at the University of Montana.
