Pequot critic claims intimidation

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002

Democrat Congressional hopeful Jeff Benedict is claiming he is being muscled out of a chance to represent voters in Connecticut.

He says Democrat leaders in the 2nd district are pressuring his supporters. He chalks it up to some in the party who he claims want to prevent a primary by choosing a candidate of their own rather than the will of the voters.

In an opinion piece published in the paper, a local leader says the "good-old-boy network" is working against Benedict. Ledyard mayor Wes Johnson says Benedict's strong stance on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and federal recognition are needed.

Party leaders are denying the charges. Joe Courtney has all but locked up the Democratic nomination.
