Army Secretary and former Enron executive Thomas E. White defended his handling of his financial affairs on Wednesday and said he is not considering resigning.

But White said he would step down if he felt his job was compromised. However, he added that no one has asked him to do so.

White's relationship with his former company has been called into question. Although he lost money, he made $12.1 million by selling his stock during a key period of the company's bankruptcy and $31 million for the entire year.

In an editorial, The Washington Post says Congress and the American public have a right to know how White has been spending his time since joining the Bush administration. "It's not every administration official of secretarial rank who can get called on the carpet for personal behavior by influential senators of both parties," the paper writes.
