It was much colder in terms of temperature but the reaction of Alaska Natives to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's proposal to reorganize Indian trust was much the same as elsewhere in the nation.

Native leaders spoke in opposition to the plan, which they said was one step towards termination. They said it would lead to parceling out of Bureau of Indian Affairs functions to other agencies.

Complaints were also aired on Ross Swimmer, whom Norton tapped to lead the transition to a now-stalled effort to create the Bureau of Indian Trust Assets Management (BITAM).

The next consultation session takes place in the Washington, D.C.-area on February 1. That session will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, in Arlington, Virginia, accessible via the Crystal City Metro.

The session coincides with the impact week meeting of the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET). The group, which represents more than 20 tribes, has invited Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to speak on Monday.
