TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2002

The Department of Interior is hosting its sixth consultation on a proposal to create an Indian trust agency.

The meeting will be held tomorrow at the Hilton Anchorage on 500 West 3rd Street in Anchorage, Alaska. It will start at 9 a.m.

The session is being hosted by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb and his staff.

A nationwide tribal task force will also meet in Anchorage. The task force is working to develop alternatives to the Bureau of Indian Trust Asset Management (BITAM), which tribes have unanimously opposed.

Following Alaska, the consultation continues in the Washington, D.C.-area on February 1. That session will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, in Arlington, Virginia, accessible via the Crystal City Metro.

A Congressional hearing on trust reform is scheduled February 6. The House Resources Committee is holding it and has invited several department officials and tribal leaders to serve as witnesses.

Future BITAM meetings are planned for Portland, Oregon, on February 14 but McCaleb's staff has not announced the location. Dates and locations of meetings in Billings, Montana, and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona are also up in the air.
