The Department of Interior is trying to buy the mineral rights of a Florida family whose plan to drill for oil in the Big Cypress National Preserve has been approved, Secretary Gale Norton said on Wednesday.

Norton made the announcement on her first official visit to the Everglades. Buying the rights would stop the exploration the Collier company has proposed for the preserve.
