THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2001 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut has told Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) to continue hosting talks over land-into-trust with three neighboring towns. But the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston don't agree and have relieved Simmons of his role. Preston still wants to keep discussing the issue with the tribe but has suggested a professional mediator help out. The towns oppose the addition of trust land to the Pequot Reservation. They believe the tribe is prohibited from making land-into-trust applications but a federal appeals court has disagreed. Nevertheless, the tribe has been willing to limit its acquisitions to 880 acres for the next 35 years. Ledyard and North Stonington have said the offer is not enough while Preston wants to keep talks open. Get the Story:
