Candidates consider Pequot talks
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2001

The New London Day has asked several candidates for Ledyard town council about settling the town's land-into-trust dispute with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The town has dropped out of talks over the issue. But some candidates say the town should continue to negotiate.

Others, however, say they oppose any attempts by the tribe to seek trust land. If the town negotiates, they say, the tribe should be forced to limit the size its reservation once and for all.

A federal court of appeals has rejected the argument that the tribe is prohibited from seeking more land.
