THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001

The State Department is sending a team of officials to the World Conference Against Racism with the goal of eliminating references to Zionism as racism from the agenda.

Michael E. Southwick, deputy assistant secretary of state for international organizations, is leading the group to Durban, South Africa. They may or may not participate in sessions.

Secretary of State Colin Powell decided not to go because of the Zionism issue.

The conference officially begins on Friday.
