Helms announces retirement from Senate

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2001 Senator Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), one of the most conservative members of Congress, on Wednesday announced he will retire when his term ends in January 2003. Helms, 79, said he was urged by his family not to seek re-election. He has served five terms. The news of his retirement has fueled speculation about who will run for his seat. Get the Story:
