THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 Rep. Heather Wilson (R-N.M.) has played an increasingly public role in the debate over a national energy policy, a move which some say is calculated to keep her in office. Wilson is one of a number of Republicans who have been identified as "vulnerable" as the GOP aims to keep its hold on the House. She recently survived re-election last fall, narrowly defeating John Kelly. Yesterday, she was part of an effort to bring a compromise on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The proposal, limiting development to 2,000 acres, was eventually adopted as part of a broad energy bill. Wilson recently signed onto a letter calling for a special hearing into the trust fund. Wilson has joined with Republican Senator Pete Domenici in opposing a Department of Interior legal opinion which says Sandia Pueblo was wrongfully deprived of 10,000 acres of land in New Mexico.
