Justice Thomas wanted off death penalty case

MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2001

The lawyer representing a Texas man whose death penalty case is pending before the Supreme Court believes Justice Clarence Thomas should recuse himself.

Accrording to Walter Long, the son of the man Napoleon Beazley was convicted of killing had a close relationship with Thomas. The son, J. Michael Luttig, was also a law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia.

Scalia has recused himself.

Luttig is a federal judge.
