Consumer nominee could be stalled

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) on Monday said he has no intention of scheduling a floor vote for Mary Sheila Gall, President Bush's pick to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission, if she is not approved at the committee level.

A number of Democrats and consumer advocates have attacked Gall's record on child safety. In confirmation hearings last week, she defended the actions she has taken as a commissioner of the CPSC.

The Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is supposed to vote on Gall's confirmation this Thursday.

If Gall fails to clear the committee, she'd be the first of Bush's appointees to be defeated by the Senate.
