TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2001 Barring any last-minute schedule changes, Oglala Lakota activist / actor / author / aspiring politician / convicted felon Russell Means will be in the spotlight on Native America Calling today. Means, a part-time resident of New Mexico, has been nominated by the Libertarian Party to run for Governor in 2003. But state officials say he may not be able to hold public office because of a prior felony conviction. The conviction stems from his American Indian Movement days in South Dakota, when he was charged for interrupting a court proceeding. The law under which he was prosecuted, however, has since been taken off the books. If Means can get a pardon for the crime, he could run for office. But a pardon from noted "Indian Killer," South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow, is unlikely. Means has taken advantage of a convicted felon amnesty program in New Mexico which just went into effect. He registered to vote earlier this month. The Libertarian Party is going to challenge the felon rule. Native America Calling airs at 1PM Eastern Standard Time. Only on Indianz.Com:
