Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) on Sunday said California Congressman Gary Condit (D) should resign if proven he had an affair with Chandra Levy.

"Infidelity is always unacceptable, but particularly when you have an elected official involved in a position of trust with a young girl, an intern," Lott said on Fox News Sunday.

In interviews with police, Condit, 53, reportedly admitted having an affair with Levy, a government intern at the time. His aides have publicly disavowed a relationship beyond a friendship.

Levy, 24, was last seen on April 30. Authorities say she used her computer for the last time on May 1, using it to plan a return trip to California and visit various Internet sites.

Condit passed a privately-administered lie detector test which cleared him of any involvement in Levy's disappearance, his lawyer said on Friday. The test is being questioned by police and disavowed by Levy's family.
