Young population limits clout

Populations on South Dakota's reservations are increasing but they are also increasingly young, meaning the numerical gain doesn't always translate to political gain.

But in a few years, observers say the young population will be of voting age. So tribal and community leaders are working to get more Indian youth involved and interested in political beyond the local level.

Traditionally, Indian turnout in federal and state elections is low.

Native Americans make up 8.25 percent of the state's population.
