Cantwell on Indian Affairs Committee

WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001

Thanks to the Democratic take over of the Senate, Freshman Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) is the newest member of the Indian Affairs Committee.

As a result of the organizing resolution finalized before the Fourth of July recess, one Democrat has been added to all legislative committees. This gives the Democrats a one-seat majority.

Last November, Cantwell defeated incumbent Slade Gorton (R), considered by many a foe to tribal sovereignty. Tribal leaders in the state endorsed Cantwell and were part of a larger coalition who helped her sail to a slim victory.

The Indian Affairs Committee is chaired by Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii). The Vice Chairman is Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.)
