White House spars with NAACP

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2001

The White House on Monday lashed back at the chairman of the board of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who criticized President Bush for his record on race relations.

White House officials said Julian Bond's remarks about Bush's Cabinet members were "unfortunate." Press Secretary Ari Fleischer went further and said Bond's remarks were not the kind "made under Kweisi Mfume's leadership, when Kweisi Mfume was president of the NAACP."

Mfume is still president of the NAACP. In speech yesterday, he said Bush hasn't been living up to the label of "compassionate conservatism."

Bush sent a videotaped address to NAACP's annual convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, yesterday.
