Democrats beginning budget battle

JUNE 19, 2001

Democrats now in control of the Senate are promising a battle over a $2 trillion Republican-approved budget they say is inadequate.

But Republicans of their own right are also seeking changes to President Bush's attempt to reign in federal spending. Last week, the House Appropriations Committee approved measures to increase budgets above Bush's proposed level.

For his part, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) is promising to break the bank on funding for construction of Indian schools. He is disappointed with Bush's request of about $130 million for construction and wants more.

Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs nominee Neal McCaleb said he would support more funding during his confirmation hearing last week.
