MAY 9, 2001

Republican and Democratic leaders of the House International Affairs Committee on Tuesday voted to hold back dues to the United Nations in response for the United States losing a seat on the Human Rights Commission.

The panel agreed to pay some $582 million in dues. But they are holding off a later payment of $244 million.

Secretary of State Colin Powell told The New York Times the vote against the United States was retaliation for the US' positions on a number of issues.
