MAY 24, 2001 With the pending departure of Senator Jim Jeffords (Vt.) from the Republican party, Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) told the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday he was ready to go back to "the minority position." Domenici, the state's senior Senator, is currently chairman of the Budget Committee and and the Energy Appropriations Subcommittee. A change in the balance of power in the Senate would mean he would lose those positions. But for Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), he would become chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He's the ranking Democrat who presided over Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's confirmation hearings and has been critical of her past record and actions since she has taken in office.
