Jeffords delays party announcement

Update: Jeffords left the GOP.

In the biggest news to hit the political world since former Attorney General Janet Reno last week said she'd run for Florida Governor, Senator Jim Jeffords (?-Vt.) on Wednesday delayed his announcement on his departure from the GOP.

Saying he wanted to be with his peeps, Jeffords will instead announce the change today while in Vermont. Meanwhile, Republicans, including President Senator Pete Domenici (N.M.), tried in vain to convince Jeffords to stay, as Democrats, journalists, and political pundits salivated over the potential changes that will come to the Senate should the change occur.

A tip in the scales of power could alter Bush's legislative agenda, his judicial and other nominees, and bring about changes in the issues that become a priority in the Senate.
