Peltier foe to leave FBI post

MAY 1, 2001

Ardent Leonard Peltier foe Louis Freeh told FBI employees today he will step down as the Bureau's director in June.

Freeh was appointed by Clinton in 1993 for a ten-year term. President Bush had asked him to stay on with the new administration.

In a letter directed to Clinton but published on a web site instead of being sent to the White House, Freeh urged Clinton and then Attorney General last December not to free Peltier. Clinton was said to have paid little attention to Freeh's remarks although he later declined to grant executive clemency to or pardon Peltier.
