Natives urged against approaching UN

MAY 11, 2001

At a Senate hearing on Thursday, Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) warned the Alaska Federation of Natives that taking its human rights complaints to the United Nations could serve merely to embarrass the United States.

AFN President Julie Kitka said the group wants to attend The World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance to help combat racism and discrimination of Alaska Natives. Murkowski said, however, the conference might be a "sham."

A number of racially oriented crimes and attacks on Alaska Natives have occurred in the past couple years.

Murkowski's remarks came at a Senate Committee on Indian Affairs hearing on Alaska Native issues.
