MAY 10, 2001

The Bush administration on Wednesday warned Congress not to withhold paying the full dues the United States owes to the United Nation.

Republican and Democratic leaders of the House International Affairs Committee have threatened to hold back dues in retaliation for the United States losing a seat on the Human Rights Commission. But the administration says the action could lead to recrimnation.

The panel has agreed to pay some $582 million in dues, but wants to hold off a later payment of $244 million. A vote is set for today.
