APRIL 9, 2001 The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma on Friday reported it has been asked to cut back education spending at Seqouyah High School by 15 percent, due to proposed budget cuts at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribe says the acting director of the BIA's Indian Education Programs asked the tribe to cut back spending for fiscal year 2002. The tribe says it will have to lay off six teachers and five support staff to meet the proposed cut. The cuts would still leave the school with a high student-teacher ratio: currently there are 99 staff for 250 students. Secretary of Interior Gale Norton will present the Bush administration's fiscal year 2002 budget request for the BIA today. Get the Budget Proposal:
