New Mexico Senator Leonard Tsosie (D-Crownpoint) was named co-chair of the interim Redistricting Committee on Tuesday.

Tsosie, from the Navajo Nation, and the committee will begin work immediately on redrawing the state's three US Congressional districts and 112 state legislative ones. The districts, like those in all states, are drawn using the results of the Census 2000.

Indian and Hispanic voting districts helped elect former US Congressman and former Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson.

Tsosie's appointment drew criticism from the former leader of the Senate's top leader, Manny Aragon, and one of Aragon's supporters.
