APRIL 24, 2001

A former employee of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation will go before tribal court this week to try and prove he was wrongly terminated from his job.

Walter Leo Fletcher said he was fired when tribal officials found out he was writing a fictional manuscript about life on the reservation. Fletcher says it focused on differences in class and race in the tribe: in addition to being Pequot, tribal members have African-American and Caucasian blood.

Fletcher was married to a tribal member who was also let go from her job the same day he was fired. Patricia Sebastian Dames was eventually rehired.

Fletcher is suing the tribe for $2 million.
