APRIL 18, 2001 The National Legal and Policy Center on Tuesday formally accused freshman Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) of violating federal election law. The group filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing Cantwell of not reporting until after the election that she secured two loans with favorable terms. The group says Cantwell only disclosed the loans until the FEC contacted her. A Cantwell spokeperson dismissed the complaint as "a politically motivated attack filed by a right-wing fringe group."
