APRIL 11, 2001

A lobbyist for the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) criticized the proposed fiscal year 2002 budget for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Jack Jackson Jr. said the program doesn't correct years of underfunding of Indian programs. The BIA budget is approximately 22 percent of the Department of Interior's request for 2002.

In testimony before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, NCAI President Sue Masten said the organization supported increases for a number of programs like law enforcement and health care.

NCAI is the oldest and largest inter-tribal organization.
