Alaskans like racial mixes

MARCH 22, 2001

Alaskans reported themselves as belonging to two racial groups twice as often as the country as a whole, according to Census Bureau figures released on Tuesday.

Some 5.4 percent of Alaskans identified themselves as belonging to more than one race. The Census 2000 was the first time respondents could choose more than one but only 2.4 percent of Americans opted to do that.

The largest combination of mixed-race respondents was White and Alaska Native.
