MARCH 22, 2001

The Alaska Native population in Anchorage, Alaska, and surrounding boroughs grew tremendously over the past decade, according to Census 2000 figures released on Tuesday.

In Anchorage, the Native population grew by 30 percent over the past decade. In Matanuska-Susitna, it jumped 68 percent, while in Kenai Peninsula, it increased 26 percent.

The Cook Inlet Tribal Council, a non-profit Alaska Native organization serving Anchorage, says the population there might even be higher than what the Census Bureau reports. The council says more and more Natives are requesting their services.
