MARCH 22, 2001

According to Census 2000 figures released on Wednesday, American Indians in Montana make up about 6.4 percent of the population, down from 6.2 percent in 1990.

Some are attributing the dip to yet another undercount of Indians in the state. The net undercount of American Indians in the entire country was 4.2 percent, but the exact impact on Montana won't be known until adjusted data or future studies are undertaken.

The Indian population grew about 6.8 percent over the past decade, while the state as a whole grew by nearly twice as much.
