MARCH 22, 2001

The McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill was amended on Wednesday to forbid broadcasters from hiking up the cost of advertising closer to election time.

Broadcaster are already required to provide discounts to politicians' advertisements. But Senators had complained television stations would increase prices as an election neared and voted 70-30 to approve the amendment.

By a 69-31 vote, however, they rejected an amendment that would have required unions and corporations to get permission from members or shareholders before using their funds for political purposes. The provision has been supported by President George W. Bush.
