Cherokee's Swimmer eyes Congressional seat

Former Cherokee Nation Chief Ross Swimmer (R) on Tuesday filed organizatiional papers with the Oklahoma Secretary of State to explore a possible run for Congress.

Swimmer will put together an exploratory committee to test the waters. He would be running for the 1st district, which Rep. Steve Largent plans on vacating come 2002.

If elected, Swimmer would be the second Cherokee Nation tribal member elected to Congress. Brad Carson (D-Okla) was elected last fall.

Swimmer was former head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs under President Ronald Reagan.
