The following is a breakdown of the fiscal year 2002 proposed budgets for each agency, as prepared by the Washington Post. Increases or decreases are based on the amount of money by law the government is allowed to spend in the current fiscal year or in future ones.

Department of Agriculture - www.usda.gov
Cut from $19.4 to $17.9 billion. Represents a 7.7 percent decrease from fiscal year 2001.

Department of Commerce - www.doc.gov
Cut by $5.9 percent to $4.8 billion.

Department of Defense - www.dod.gov
Up to $310.5 billion, an increase of 4.8 percent from fiscal year 2001.

Department of Education - www.ed.gov
Increased by 11.5 percent to $44.5 billion, a figure Democrats contest. The largest increase in any agency.

Department of Energy - www.doe.gov
Cut by 3.6 percent.

Environmental Protection Agency - www.epa.gov
Down by 6.4 percent to $7.3 billion. The administration is pushing for cleanup of toxic Brownfield sites for both tribes and states.

Department of Health and Human Services - www.hhs.gov
Increased by 5.2 percent. Increases funding for the National Institutes of Health.

Department of Health and Human Housing and Urban Development - www.hud.gov
Increased by 6.7 percent to $30.4 billion.

Department of Interior - www.doi.gov
Down by 4 percent to $9.8 billion.

Department of Justice - www.usdoj.gov
Cut by 4.8 percent.

Department of Labor - www.dol.gov
Cut by 5.8 percent.

Department of State - www.state.gov

Department of Transportation - www.dot.gov
Down by 11.4 percent.

Department of Treasury - www.ustreas.gov
Increased by 5 percent to $14.7 billion.

Department of Veterans Affairs - www.va.gov
Up by 4.5 percent to $1 billion.
