Leaders of a number of national Jewish organizations on Monday criticized President Bush's plan to increase federal funding to faith-based and religious groups.

Bush's plan calls on federal agencies to eliminate barriers which may have prohibited funding to religious groups. But critics yesterday said the money would go to groups who are targeting people of the Jewish faith for conversion or those who have anti-Semitic views.

As Governor of Texas, Bush was criticized for a program which gave funding to a church group whose drug abuse program tried to convince clients to convert to Christianity. John J. DiIulio, director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, said such a group would not be able to get federal funding.
