FEBRUARY 1, 2001 Newly confirmed Secretary of Interior Gale Norton met in private with leaders of several environmental groups during the past month but won't disclose their identities. Norton was criticized heavily by a number of environmental organizations. Some are still warning she will have a negative effect on public lands as head of the Department of Interior. Norton had her first Cabinet meeting yesterday and also called Governors of Western states, seeking to make sure their voices are heard when she makes decisions. Get the Story:
