Peltier foe tries to keep position

JANUARY 5, 2001 Leonard Peltier foe Representative Henry Hyde (R-IL) tried to keep his position as Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary but his fellow Republican lawmakers on Thursday turned down his request. Instead, Hyde was named to oversee a foreign policy panel on the International Relations Committee. When the GOP won a majority in Congress in 1994, they decided to limit chairmanships to six years and Hyde's time was up. Last month, Hyde made public a series of letters written by FBI Director Louis J. Freeh, urging President Bill Clinton not to grant Leonard Peltier clemency. Get the Story:
