JANUARY 31, 2001 John Ashcroft, President George W. Bush's controversial pick to head the Justice Department and the only nominee not yet confirmed by the Senate, was approved by a 10-8 vote by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. All Republicans voted to approve Ashcroft's nomination with Senator Russ Feingold being the only Democrat to do the same.
