JANUARY 30, 2001

Freshman Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt) on Monday said they would vote against the confirmation of John Ashcroft for Attorney General.

Leahy is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. He presided over Ashcroft's week-long confirmation hearings.

A number of Democrats are expected to vote against Ashcroft but he is predicted to win confirmation. After Gale Norton for Secretary of Interior and Christine Whitman ad Environmental Protection Agency administrator are expected to be confirmed today, Ashcroft will be the only candidate not yet confirmed.
