DECEMBER 7, 2000 The Washington state Republican Party who earlier defended the party against a storm of criticism by tribal governments on Thursday said he will survive his current controversy. While Don Benton admits he should have asked for party input on the $360,000 in cash he paid for an office building, he says he is confident of re-election as party chairman next month. The party has launched an investigation into why as much as $1.5 million in state GOP funds went unspent. Party members say the money could have helped defeated candidates, including Senator Slade Gorton. Get the Story:
