JANUARY 22, 2001 The Senate on Saturday approved by a voice vote seven of President George W. Bush's Cabinet choices. The Senate confirmed retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as Secretary of State; Donald H. Rumsfeld as Sefense Secretary; former Alcoa Inc. chairman Paul H. O'Neill as Treasury Secretary, Houston School Superintendent Roderick R. Paige as Education Secretary; former senator Spencer Abraham (R-Mich.) as Energy Secretary; Donald L. Evans as Commerce Secretary; and Ann M. Veneman, former California agriculture secretary, as the first female Secretary of agriculture. A vote on Gale Norton for Secretary of Interior will occur after the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources approves her nomination. Chairman Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) is expected to call a meeting on the issue on Tuesday. The Committee on the Judiciary might vote on John Ashcroft for Attorney General on Wednesday. Get the Story:
