DECEMBER 1, 2000 The political career of recently defeated Representative Rick Lazio (R-NY) may soon be resurrected with his nomination as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Lazio's name is being mentioned to be the next head of HUD, a position currently held by Andrew Cuomo. Sources say he has spoken with the Bush campaign but Bush is currently mum on specific people he is considering for his Cabinet. Lazio is chair of the House Subcommittee on Housing. He has authored several housing bills and a former aide who now heads the National American Indian Housing Council praised his work on Indian housing. But Lazio's comments about Indian gaming and land claims angered many during his run for Senate. He lost to Hillary Clinton, who became the first First Lady to be elected to public office. During his tenure, Cuomo has visited the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota twice. He also recently visited Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico. Relevant Links:
