JANUARY 18, 2001

Democratic members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary on Wednesday clashed with Attorney General nominee John Ashcroft, accusing him of being racially insensitive by opposing the federal judgeship of an African-American judge, making remarks to a pro-Confederate magazine, and speaking at a university which at one time banned interracial dating.

Ashcroft denied being racist and said he repudiates racism, racist organizations, and isn't a member of any. But he professed ignorance on Bob Jones University's dating policy and wouldn't rule out speaking there in the future. He didn't directly respond to his support of Confederate General Robert E. Lee either.

Day three of Ashcroft's hearing continues today as Ronnie White, the Missouri judge whom he helped defeate, will testify.
