NOVEMBER 8, 2000 Incumbent Democrat Patrick Kennedy has been re-elected to the House of Representatives. Kennedy easily defeated his challenger, Republican Stephen Cabral, to win a fourth term in the 1st Congressional District. Kennedy received 67 percent of the vote to Cabral's 33 percent. In a state with only one federally recognized tribe, the Narragansett Tribe, Kennedy has been active on Indian issues within the Democratic party. He co-founded the Native American Caucus, the first of its kind for any party. At the Democratic National Convention, the caucus met every day to discuss tribally related issues. But Kennedy also brought the party's commitment to tribes on the convention floor on opening night back in August. "In this election, and beyond, we must ask ourselves whether we can afford to give our Native Americans--our Native Americans the dignity that they have so long deserved, and have yet to get," he said. Kennedy is 33. He has served in the House since 1994. Relevant Links:
