Gorton still in lead

NOVEMBER 20, 2000 Senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash) is still ahead of Democratic challenger Maria Cantwell, but his lead has dwindled from over 10,000 to less than 2,000. About 51,000 votes remain left to be counted, however. Should there continue to be a vote difference of less than one half of 1 percent between the candidates, an automatic recount will take place. Votes are still coming in from King County, a Cantwell stronghold. But counts in Spokane and Benton counties also have to be completed, and those counties favor Gorton. Related Stories:
